Are children still safe in schools?
When you drop your kids off at the school gates, do you assume they will be in a safe, nurturing environment? So do we! However, recent reports have shown that children as young as five have been found to be bringing a variety of weapons to school!
In 2016-17 alone, 1,369 weapons were found - a rise of almost 20% on the previous year despite not covering a full 12 month period! The thousands of weapons confiscated from schoolchildren include samurai swords, axes and air guns. Other items confiscated by police in the past year included at least 26 guns, including BB guns, air rifles and an imitation firearm.
Police chiefs have raised their concerns that they have seen a “worrying” increase in the number of young people carrying knives. It follows the case of Ann Maguire, who was stabbed to death at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds in April 2014 by a 15-year-old pupil.
Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Police announced officers would be working with schools to highlight the potential consequences of carrying a knife. Chief constable Alf Hitchcock, who leads the National Police Chiefs Council taskforce on knife crime, said: “Schools should be free of weapons and all children should be able to learn without fear or violence.”
