Are women keeping active enough?
A recent report has found that women are not doing enough exercise to stay healthy. Some women feel that there is more pressure on them to be thin than healthy, perhaps as a result of the media’s portrayal of women. Since the Olympics in 2012 and because of the recent success of the England Women’s football team at the World Cup there has been a rise in the profile of female stars of sport that has helped to encourage girls to take part in sport at school age. Despite this, school sport can discourage girls from keeping active due to reasons such as girls’ PE kit and the focus on boys’ sports teams.
At the beginning of this year Sport England announced their This Girl Can campaign to help encourage more women to take up sport and remove the idea that women are not as competent as men when it comes to sport. However, the number of women engaging in the recommended amount of exercise per week is still considerably lower than the number of men, so despite the improvement in recent years there is still work to be done to inspire women to keep active and healthy.
