Asda becomes first supermarket to sell wonky veg
Fancy feeding your family for a week with one box? Well now you can - Asda will be selling boxes of “wonky veg” for just £3.50! The supermarket says that one box contains enough veg for a family of four for a week. The vegetables are selected from farmers’ crops that are misshapen or are a different size to average and are therefore sold at a lower price as they may take customers longer to peel and prepare.
The boxes include a range of veg such as potatoes, carrots, peppers and onions, as well as salad ingredients like cucumbers. Around 15% of vegetables such as potatoes and carrots don’t make it onto the supermarket shelves if they are misshapen or blemished. Asda began to sell misshapen veg on their shelves in January last year, but the supermarket has now gone one step further by creating boxes filled with veg that didn’t make it onto the regular vegetable aisle.
Our view: the boxes are a great way of keeping your family’s meals healthy without having to spend a fortune on fresh produce and let’s face it, there’s nothing wrong with a bendy carrot!
