Neighbours to be axed?
Who’s a fan of Neighbours, the long-running Aussie soap that’s graced our screens for more than three decades? Well, it could be bad news if you are…reports say the classic could be axed!
The UKMums.TV team was surprised by the news, after all it’s been something of a must-watch in many of our childhoods since it started on British TV 31 years ago. It’s also launched the careers of countless acting stars such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Holly Valance. And who could forget its iconic screen moments such as the wedding of love hearts Charlene and Scott!
But as the MailOnline reports, talks over the British deal with Channel 5 have stalled and Neighbours could be cancelled if broadcasters fail to agree new terms! A source is quoted as saying: “'The renegotiation of the Neighbours Channel 5 deal has become very fraught and is in jeopardy. Channel 5 really want to keep the show. But the failure to reach a deal is being blamed on Channel 5's new American owners Viacom refusing to sign off on the figures and not understanding the cultural importance of the show in the UK.”
Neighbours was first screened by the BBC and at its peak in 1990 an amazing 21 million viewers tuned in to watch the popular soap. It moved from the BBC in 2008 after FremantleMedia asked the broadcaster to pay £300m over eight years, three times the show's usual fee.
Here at UKMums.TV, we hope negotiations work out. The programme is something of an institution, isn’t it? What do you think of this news?
