GP consultation time slammed as ‘crazy’
How long has it been since your last trip to the doctor? Maybe the appointment was for you or a child. Did you feel your time with a GP was short, too limited maybe?
Here at UKMums.TV we’re asking the question because doctors’ leaders have now criticised the length of GP consultations in the NHS as ‘crazy’, according to a BBC report. The standard appointment is around 10 minutes, and this is thought to be the shortest in the developing world!
To make matters worse, many appointments are missed, putting our stretched health service under further financial strain. We wonder, is it time action was taken? A poll for the BBC of 1,033 UK adults has suggested the public would be open to a tougher approach. Seven in 10 said charging people for missed appointments would be acceptable. And although the majority, 51 per cent, said they were against the idea of paying to have a guaranteed appointment within 24 hours, 20 per cent said they would be willing to pay more than £10.
What do you think? Would you pay for a guaranteed appointment, or do you think this would be a slippery slope before which everyone has to pay? We’d love to know your thoughts on this. Tell us over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
