Louis Smith hit by sore loser accusations
There was ‘Super Saturday’ at Last year’s Olympics in London, and it was ‘Sensational Sunday’ yesterday as Team GB scooped a haul of gold medals, taking us to second place in the medals table. Amazing achievement!
But not everyone was cheering, with some Team GB athletes visibly heartbroken as they missed out on the gold they had set their sights on. They include gymnast Louis Smith who won silver in the men’s pommel horse. He broke down in tears after the result was confirmed which put him behind teammate Max Whitlock who won two gymnastic golds.
As the Mail Online reports, Louis came under fire on social media for appearing not to congratulate Whitlock with people accusing him of being a sore loser. Louis is reported to hit back at his critics by saying: “Because it wasn't shown on camera doesn't mean I didn't show my respect. Ask Max yourself then apologise.” He also said his tears and lack of smiles on the podium were because he was thinking about all his mother had done for him, adding: “My tears weren't that of sadness. I'm not a wimp. It was of pride and relief.”
