Is where you live impacting your maternity care?
It is important that every woman receives the best possible maternity care. Now, a report has found that the maternity care that is available to new mums in hospitals varies greatly depending on where in England you live.
The findings suggest that women may not always be receiving the best possible care that they can, with different areas of the country having different rates of caesarean sections and instrumental deliveries. In some maternity units, 8% of mothers needed emergency c-sections, whereas in other units the figure rose to 15%.
Experts say that it is normal for there to be variation in the types of maternity care that is available in different places, but we say that isn’t the point and information on where variations occur should be more readily available. Experts also added that the NHS is a safe place to give birth and being honest about the care that is on offer will only help to make it safer.
