Jodie Whittaker to play the first female Doctor Who

The thirteenth Doctor has been revealed and it’s not what everyone was expecting. The announcement was made on BBC One following the Men's Wimbledon Final when there was sure to be plenty of families tuned in. In the trailer for the new series of Doctor Who, the Doctor’s identity was revealed as Jodie Whittaker.

The Broadchurch actress will be taking on the role from Peter Capaldi who has played the role for four years. The choice to cast a female in hit show has divided viewers. Some fans claim that the move is all to do with 'political correctness' while others have spoken out in their support of the move.

Speaking about her new role, Jodie Whittaker said: “I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It's more than an honour to play the Doctor.”
