MTV awards go “gender neutral”

The MTV award nominations are in, and boy does it look like it going to be a good year! The categories are thick with great talent with Emma Watson and Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya dominating the categories.

The Disney live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast has swooped up a massive four award nomination including Best Movie and Best Actor, but that’s not what’s got everyone talking about this year’s awards.

MTV awards has announced that they will move away from traditional gender specific awards such as ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Actor’ and instead have one category named ‘Best Actor’ which will be inclusive to both genders. This means that the category “Best Actor in a Movie” will see Emma Watson compete with Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy for the award. Do you think this could spark an end to gendered entertainment awards?

Another big change for the show this year is the inclusion of TV shows and shows from streaming services. This allows huge shows like Game Of Thrones, Stranger Things and The Walking Dead the chance to battle it out for an award.

Who do you think will come out top this year at the MTV Movie and TV awards? Let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter.
