Oscars blunder sparks awards shock
How about this for a mishap of epic proportions, at the glitzy Oscars awards ceremony no less?! This mistake has been dubbed the biggest blunder in the awards’ illustrious 88-year history!
If you haven’t already heard the news, picture this: The big anticipation yesterday evening as one of the biggest awards of the night for Best Picture was due to be announced. Veteran actor Warren Beatty took to the stage along with Faye Dunaway, calling out the Damien Chazelle musical winner. Cue the cheers!
The big problem was La La Land WASN’T the winner! And the penny hadn’t dropped until one of La La Land’s producers, Fred Berger, was MIDWAY through his acceptance speech. Producer Jordan Horowitz had to interrupt to say said there had been a mistake, announcing Moonlight had in fact won and this was not a joke! The audience of stars gasped in shock as the producers were forced to hand the award back. Imagine the embarrassment!
To prove it wasn’t a joke, Beatty showed the card to confirm the Barry Jenkins’ film was in fact the rightful winner and attempted to explain what had gone wrong, saying he had been given the wrong envelope containing a card naming Emma Stone, who had just won best actress, as well as the name of the film.
Fortunately, it didn’t appear to take the shine off the moment for Moonlight, a film about a young black man growing up in Miami. As the Metro reports, Moonlight director Barry Jenkins said: “Very clearly, even in my dreams, this could not be true. But to hell with dreams, I’m done with it – ’cause this is true. Oh my goodness.”
An investigation’s now underway to discover what happened. No doubt someone’s in for a big telling off! It wasn’t a bad night for La La Land overall, though, as the musical walked away with six Oscars in total!
