Shopping basket theft on the rise following bag charge
A Tesco store has gone to the length of putting security tags on its shopping baskets to prevent people from stealing them. Shoppers at the store in Chadderton, Oldham stole a third of the supermarket’s baskets in a week following the introduction of a 5p charge on plastic bags. The charge was brought in to encourage people to reuse bags for life rather than use plastic bags in store that are associated with an increased amount of litter. However the new rule has forced customers to want to steal baskets to carry their shopping, leaving supermarkets with a lack of baskets.
The Tesco store in Oldham aimed to “thief-proof” their wire baskets by adding security tags to them to prevent thieves, but other Tesco stores are yet to follow in the footsteps of the store, with the Tesco spokesman saying that “it is not a nationwide thing.” The spokesman added that Tesco wants to provide customers with the best service by “making sure baskets are available to shoppers.”
What do you think, do you agree with the new 5p charge on plastic bags?
