Should children be allowed to go on holiday during term-time?
Should parents be allowed to take their children out of school during term-time? Many parents would agree that the cost of holidays during school holidays is much greater than during term-time, but at the moment the Government will only allow pupils to be absent from school in “exceptional circumstances”.
One father, Jon Platt, from the Isle of Wight will have his case heard by the High Court after he was fined £120 for taking his daughter on a term-time holiday to Florida in April 2015. Mr Platt refused to pay the fine after showing that his daughter’s attendance at school was still above 90%. The High Court ruling could bring about a change in the law and form a precedent for how cases of truancy are dealt with in the future.
Mr Platt told ITV News, "I find it staggering that they are arguing that one day of missed education can amount to a criminal offence and I very much hope the High Court disagrees."
