Should men be paid more money in tennis?
World number one tennis player, Novak Djokovic, has suggested that men should be paid more prize money in tennis as they have more spectators and sell more tickets, a view shared by many male tennis players. Djokovic defended his remarks in which he said that viewing statistics should be used to distribute prize money fairly at joint events, meaning that men would receive higher prizes as their games attract more attention.
Proposed changes in the distribution of prize money could lead to women being paid more in the future so the suggestion to pay men even more could undermine the idea that men and women should be treated equally, despite the fact that men play more sets.
Djokovic’s suggestion comes after Raymond Moore, CEO of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, said controversially that players such as Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer have carried the sport and female players should recognise this.
