Success in Rio for Team GB
Whoop whoop for Team GB! The Games in Rio have been Britain’s greatest Olympic achievement in over a century, with our team scooping 27 golds in total to claim second place in the medal table!
Not for 108 years has Britain taken the second spot. The United States topped the table with 46 golds. As the BBC [LINK-http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/37150155] reports, there was a series of Olympic firsts for Team GB. Never before has a Briton won a diving or gymnastics gold.
There have been British champions across 15 different sports, an amazing achievement considering that only 20 years ago Team GB scored 36th place in the medal table in Atlanta! Great Britain had never finished above China before, the huge nation being one of the Games’ most dominant countries. Liz Nicholl, chief executive of UK Sport, the body responsible for distributing funds from national government to Olympic sports, is quoted as saying on the final day of the competition in Rio: “We are one of those sporting superpowers now. We are up there ahead of China in the medal table.”
But all is not over as we’ve got next month’s Paralympics to look forward to. Let’s hope there will be similar successes! What did you think of the Rio Olympics this year? Let us know over on our Facebook and Twitter.
