The Great Spanish Tapas Taste Test
Want a taste of spicy Spanish flavour without leaving your living room? To help those who want the ultimate Spanish Tapas Night, our mum panel conducted a blind taste test of tapas from the top supermarkets to see what’s worth spending your money on.
Tapas is made up of lots of mini meals, snack and appetizers, which makes it ideal as party finger food or to enjoy over some drinks. As the Spaniards usually eat late and take their meal slow, you can mix hot and cold so that you have a few little courses. With tummies rumbling, we tested (scoffed) and rated each dish we tasted to come up with our five essentials.
Here’s what the panel (who make the judges on Great British Menu look soft - not!) thought of our meals:
1. Tesco Tapas Piri Piri Chicken - £2.50
The favourite dish of the night, this spicy, yet subtle chicken was the very first to get demolished! With a tangy tomato sauce, filled with onions, peppers and garlic and plenty of chicken in each dish – buy a couple and build the rest of the meal around them!
2. Co-op Antipasto Selection - £4
A mini tapas kit in one tub, the selection of olives, feta and the heavenly cream cheese-stuffed peppadew peppers were a big hit with testers, who loved the varied selection at a bargain price.
3. Morrison’s Chicken and Prawn Paella - £2.49
Tapas wouldn’t be complete without paella and unless you fancy cooking your own, this dish will really hit the spot. With a generous amount of prawns, creamy, sticky rice and a good helping of vegetables, this is our favourite ready-done paella by a long shot.
4. Tesco Tapas Chorizo in Red Wine - £2.50
Rich, warming and something a bit different, this chorizo dish was soaked with a full-bodied sauce, which didn't scrimp on the wine and completely won us over!
5. Tesco Tapas 4 Cheese Onion Pastries (Queso and cabolla empanadas) - £2.50
Kids will love this finger food and it was a hit with our mums too! The flavours are familiar, with a little Spanish twist and as it’s not spicy these crispy mini pastries will be a hit for even the fussiest of eaters.
Our other favourites:
Morrison’s Patatas Bravas, The Co-operative chicken and chorizo stew and Tesco Tapas Butterbeans in Tomato Sauce.
