The Ultimate Oven Pizza Test!

The Ultimate Oven Pizza Test!

Nothing says Italian quite like a slice of delicious pizza, but with so much choice available – just what do you choose?

Forget the take-away and having to spend money eating out; you can get an authentic and delicious Italian pizza at home and for a fraction of the price.

In preparation for our Around the World in 80 Days Italian Week we’ve been trying our favourite pizzas to bring you our definitive guide to the very tastiest pizzas you can buy, whether you want an old classic or a new exciting flavour to try.

Puglia
Waitrose
£5

Our winner of the day had a lovely, soft base and an excellent combination of distinct flavours. The fresh tomato and basil sauce was topped with sweet and juicy chargrilled peppers, spinach and olives - for a true flavour of the Med. The blend of mascarpone and mozzarella cheeses worked perfectly and although one of the most expensive – the generous toppings made it the clear favourite.

Truly Irresistible Limited Edition Tapas Pizza
The Co-operative
£4.19

This yummy full-flavoured pizza was a surprise hit with our testers. With plenty of olives and a wide range of traditional toppings including a smattering of spicy chorizo, this tasted fresh and full of flavour. The additional salsa which you dress after baking was also ideal for making it extra juicy.

Lombardia
Waitrose
£5

A unique, love it or hate it pizza, our mum testers definitely loved this luxurious choice! The strong blue cheese was was accompanied by an elegant pear purée and tangy sauce, which definitely made this a gourmet choice for the grown-ups.

Stonebaked Roasted Vegetables & Pesto Pizza
The Co-operative
£2.99

A really fresh Mediterranean option, which means that for once vegetarians don’t get the raw deal! The flavour combination of juicy courgettes and grilled peppers really packed a punch and as it’s loaded with vegetables, it’s also an easy and yummy way to sneak in some of your child’s five a day.

Extra Special Smoked Ham, Mushroom and Mascarpone Stone Baked Pizza
Asda
£4

We weren’t disappointed with this Extra Special delight, which has masses of artisan toppings like applewood smoked ham and porto bellini mushrooms.

The mascarpone ensured the stone-baked base stayed juicy, making this another pizza which really is more delicious than anything you can order from your local take-away.

Limited Edition Stone-Baked Mature Cheddar and Red Onion Pizza
Tesco
£3.59

Another vegetarian option, which will definitely tempt the meat-eaters to give up their pepperoni! The red onions give a nice summery twist to the traditional margherita which was packed with flavour and a generous helping of mature cheddar cheese.

This brand new recipe has only just been launched and it’s a limited edition so hurry up and get your hands on one before they sell out!

Taste the Difference Mexican Chicken 12" Pizza
Sainsbury’s
£4.70

Last but not least, the hand stretched dough on this spicy pizza is made of extra virgin olive oil which gives an authentic feel to this Mexican alternative. The cherry-bell peppers were sweet, the chicken tasty and the salsa and sour cream also helped to cool things down. But be warned – this is a seriously hot and tasty treat, if you want a real fiery kick this one’s for you!
