What to look out for with this year’s Oscar Nominations
With just over a month to go before the Oscars are announced on 26th February, ukmums.tv has had a quick peek at the likely winning contenders.
La La Land is currently the clear frontrunner for best film – this modern musical romance has swept film fans off their feet – and it seems that the only question is, can it equal or better the Oscars record of 14, currently shared by Titanic and All About Eve? Other films surely in the running are Arrival, Deadpool and Moonlight.
La La Land’s stars, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, are also tipped to be among the nominees, with Natalie Portman, Casey Affleck and Denzel Washington expected to be challenging for the top spot. There is also plenty of British interest, with Naomie Harris, Andrew Garfield, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Hugh Grant probably in the running as well. It seems that speaking up against Donald Trump at the Golden Globes has also improved Meryl Streep’s chances of her 20th nomination, which will be a record first for any actor.
But after two years with no black acting nominees, perhaps the biggest question – will it be another “White Oscars” – is likely to be a resounding “no”. Look out for Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali and Octavia Spencer in the lists, as well as previously mentioned Denzel Washington and Naomie Harris.
The nominations will be announced later today.
