Why are babies across the world sleeping in boxes?
Would you ever think of using a box as a place for your baby to sleep? The Scandinavian trend which involves putting your baby to sleep in a box has reached the UK and could help save babies’ lives across the country.
The baby box concept began in Finland where new mums are given boxes full of key items that every mum needs, with the box doubling as a cot if a mattress is inserted. The box includes a medical kit which helps to reduce life-threatening infections from birth and the box has already helped to reduce the number of suffocation deaths.
Since the Finnish Government handed one of their boxes to Prince William and Kate Middleton following the birth of Prince George, the idea of a baby box has really taken off. However, the boxes are much more than just the latest trend; they have been used to save lives in places such as India and parts of Africa where the boxes contain mosquito nets and clean-birth kits.
