Would you share parental leave with your partner?
It’s been a year since the Government introduced shared parental leave, but why is it that one year on just 1% of men take up the opportunity to share the 50 weeks of leave on offer?
The new plan aimed to help women go back into the workplace quicker and to allow men to care full time for their new baby. A survey by My Family Care and the Women’s Business Council found that the main reasons for limited uptake were financial considerations, lack of awareness and reluctance by women to share their maternity leave.
Half of men who had taken parental leave said that they were perceived negatively at work and 57% of women said that shared leave could impact negatively on their partner’s career. Despite this, two thirds of men still said that they would be interested in taking advantage of the system if they were to have another child.
