Wrong Miss Universe crowned live on TV
The wrong Miss Universe was crowned briefly on live TV following a blunder by host Steve Harvey. Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo from Colombia had already been officially crowned Miss Universe at a glamorous event in Las Vegas when Steve Harvey ran onto the stage to apologise for the mistake he had made. Harvey took full responsibility for incorrectly reading the card with the winner’s name on, resulting in him giving the title of Miss Universe to Ms Arevalo instead of the Philippines' Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, the rightful owner of the title.
Last year’s Miss Universe, also from Colombia, quickly fixed the mistake of the host by taking the crown from Ms Arevalo’s head and placing it on a stunned Ms Wurtzbach. Harvey posted an apology on his Twitter shortly after the event, saying “I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible.” He also added that he would like to apologise to the viewers and that it was “an honest mistake.”
The controversial Miss Universe competition started with women aged 19 to 27 representing 80 countries, with viewers at home voting for their favourites alongside a panel of celebrity judges.
