Facts to mark Facebook’s birthday.

Facebook turns 12 today. The website launched in 2004 and has been an internet sensation around the world ever since.  It first started as a social media platform where people could chat amongst their friends and family, share photos, statuses and videos. As the years have progressed, Facebook has turned into one of the most popular social media platforms with all the latest technology. Here are some interesting facts to mark Facebook’s birthday.

1. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, began computer programming at a young age.

Mark Zuckerburg began programming computers at a young age.  When he was 12, he built a software messaging program, allowing all of the computers in the house to communicate with those his father used in his dental office.

2. Facebook starts life as “Facemash”

Zuckerberg wrote a program called "Facemash" in 2003 while attending Harvard University.  The site used photographs compiled from the online facebooks of nine houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the 'hotter' person.  In order to do this, Zuckerberg hacked into protected areas of Harvard's computer network and copied private dormitory ID images. The site was shut down a few days later by the Harvard administration and Zuckerberg faced expulsion.   He then began writing code for a new website “Thefacebook” which launched on 4th February, 2004.

3. Was it all his own work?

Six days after the site launched, Harvard seniors Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss and Divya Narendra accused Zuckerberg of misleading them into believing that he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com and that, instead, he was using their ideas to build a competing product.  They later filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg, subsequently settling in 2008 for 1.2 million shares which was then worth $300 million.

4. Annual Salary

Zuckerburg’s annual salary as CEO of Facebook is $1!  He might need a pay rise soon - on 3rd December, 2016 Forbes reported that Facebook shares had declined 7% since 8th November, 2016, reducing his net worth by 3.7 billion dollars in just over one month!

5. Facebook’s “Friend’s Day”

Facebook has designated 4th February 2017 as “Friends Day” to celebrate its birthday.  It’s calling attention to how the site has connected people all over the world with a Friend’s Day Video montage appearing on users News Feeds, displaying photos of some memorable moments with friends and families.

6. Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, was the first major investor to back Facebook.

Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal, saw the site’s potential and invested $500,000 in the young company in 2004, receiving a 10.2 % stake. He sold the majority of his shares in 2012 for more than $1 billion – not a bad return on his investment!
