Notting Hill Carnival.
The Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe and has been taking place every August bank holiday weekend for over 50 years!!
After originating in 1964, the Notting Hill Carnival has taken place every August bank holiday weekend since, as a way for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate their own cultures and traditions. When Notting Hill carnival first started, around 500 people attended. Now, you can expect more than 1million people to attend the carnival over the weekend.
With plenty to see and do, including amazing live music, ranging from reggae, to steel bands and salsa, and also lots of traditional Caribbean food such as jerk chicken and curried goat! But there are other options if these aren’t to your taste– including barbeque and veggie food.
Our top tips for the weekend are to:
• Arrive early, and bring ear defenders for children
• Plan your travel route beforehand, as some tube stations may be closed.
• Bring some easily transportable food, and water incase the food isn’t to your tastes.
• Finally, don’t buy a vuvuzela, we’ve had enough of them after the 2010 world cup!
