Safe Sun for your Baby
Most of us will know how painful sunburn is and we’re all aware of the dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun, so now is the time to make sure that you do as much as you can to keep your baby safe.
One of the most important things is suncream – you can’t keep baby wrapped up in long sleeves and trousers all summer so you need to make sure that everything is completely covered with suncream – factor 50 or above is recommended for babies and young children; and don’t forget to keep on topping it up if you are out in the sun for any length of time.
Another important item is a sun-hat – not only does it help to prevent sunburn and sunstroke, but it also shields baby’s eyes in the bright sunlight. There are lots to choose from to suit all fashions. We particularly like the Legionnaire’s style of hat, with the material keeping the neck covered as well.
Most if not all pushchairs and prams either come with or can be fitted with sunshades to help protect your baby and there is a huge range available to choose from. Some come combined with the pram itself, others can be bought as accessories.
Don’t forget – it’s not just the sun which can cause problems for little ones. It’s very easy for baby to get overheated in the hot weather, even on duller days, so make sure that baby is dressed in light, loose-fitting clothing and offer plenty of liquids while you are out and about. Car temperatures can rise extremely quickly so make sure that you keep the car as cool as possible with the fans and/or air-conditioning to help prevent baby getting heat stroke.
