Reviews reviews award-winning musical Wicked! reviews award-winning musical Wicked! was invited to attend a fabulous showing of the award-winning London production of Wicked at the Apollo Victoria theatre on Wednesday19th November 2014 – here is what we have to say about this spell binding production…

Wicked, the classical musical that tells the incredible untold story of the Witches of Oz, had us captivated right from the beginning. The colourful costumes and wonderful songs had us pinned to our seats and thoroughly immersed into the storyline.

Wicked has been on the London stage for eight years, first premiering in September 2006 and is now the longest-running show in the West End and the 10th longest-running musical in West-End history, having been seen by over 6 million people!

Wicked has been hailed as “the biggest thing in musicals since The Phantom of the Opera opened” (The Times), “one of the biggest hits of our age” (The Observer), “the most popular show in the West End” (Time Out), “a major hit with audiences and critics alike” (BBC London News) and “one of the most popular West End musicals ever" (London Evening Standard).

Wicked continues to be a top choice of West End theatregoers having been voted Most Popular Show (Olivier Audience Award), Best West End Show and Best New Musical (WhatsOnStage Awards), Best Night Out (Evening Standard Theatre Award) and Best Family Fun (Visit London People’s Choice Award).

The story revolves around the two main characters, Elphaba and Glinda who are sorcery students who become the most unlikely of friends. Glinda’s overly comical character delighted us and after getting over her very high-pitched voice, showed true signs of comedy. Elphaba on the other hand kept us enthralled with her mood but had us feel so much compassion for the green character due to her background and somewhat unusual circumstances.

Following an encounter with The Wizard, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. The two characters extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Gaaarrrlinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Beside the story line and the colourful characters, it was the music that had us dancing and swaying in our chairs. Even though it is probably cliché, the best song by far was Defying Gravity! Filled with emotion and phenomenal showmanship, the voice of Jennifer DiNoia who played Elphaba was simply stunning. Powerful beyond belief, her voice filled the theatre and gave me us all Goosebumps that’s for sure!

The production lasted just over two hours and from our position we had a fantastic view! My only small negative is more to do with the Theatre, as there was just no leg room what’s so ever…apart from that small niggle though, there are no complaints whatsoever.
