National treasure, Dame Barbara Windsor has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
HUSBAND to Dame Barbara Windsor, Scott Mitchell, 55, confirmed that his 80-year-old wife had been given the news in 2014.
Mitchell has decided to lift the lid and go public with the news in an exclusive interview with The Sun.
In the interview, he said: “Firstly, I hope speaking out will help other families dealing with loved ones who have this cruel disease. Secondly, I want the public to know because they are naturally very drawn to Barbara and she loves talking to them."
“So rather than me living in fear she might get confused or upset, they’ll know that if her behaviour seems strange, it’s due to Alzheimer’s and accept it for what it is.”
Mitchell said that the Carry On star had been taking medication to manage the degenerative brain disease but that her symptoms had worsened recently.
Portrayed by Ross Kemp, her on-screen son in EastEnders, Grant Mitchell, paid respect to the couple on Twitter.
